Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer’s Disease is a degenerative condition that affects memory, personality, and behaviour. Over 4 million North Americans have been diagnosed with the condition, which affects ten per cent of those over the age of 65. Symptoms of Alzheimer’s include short term memory loss, fatigue, and poor speech and muscle coordination. The disease may also involve aggressive or paranoid behaviour. Alzheimer’s decreases the function of the brain, and people suffering from Alzheimer’s show abnormal amounts of plaque deposited on the brain’s nerve fibers. These deposits occur mainly in the hippocampus, the area of the brain related to memory and intellectual function. The symptoms of Alzheimer’s resemble many other debilitating conditions, and 40% of Alzheimer patients are misdiagnosed.

Several factors increase the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s. Some evidence suggests that certain people are genetically predisposed to contracting the condition. Poor nutrition has also been linked to Alzheimer’s. A varied diet rich in raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds can provide a defence against Alzheimer’s. Antioxidant foods can clear toxic substances from the brain. Vitamin E is an antioxidant vitamin that can provide some brain protection against Alzheimer’s. Foods rich in Vitamin E include wheat germ, nuts, seeds, and avocados. Vitamins B12, B6, and folic acid help boost brain function. Vitamin C and the minerals zinc and selenium act as antioxidants. Use these supplements with the guidance of your health care practitioner.

Avoid aluminum pots, soft drink or beer cans, aluminum foil, antacids, and antiperspirants to protect against Alzheimer’s.

Toxic metals, such as aluminum and mercury, are also considered risk factors. High levels of these metals have been found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. Avoiding aluminum pots, soft drink or beer cans, aluminum foil, antacids, and antiperspirants may protect you against Alzheimer’s. Garlic, horseradish, watercress and alfalfa contain sulfur, which rids the body of heavy metals. Good nutrition and sensible precautions enhance health and well-being from youth to age.
