HAIR HEALTH

The health of our hair provides important information about our general health and well-being. The non-living keratin in hair is similar to the material found in fingernails and toenails. Dry, flaky hair or hair loss often indicates other health problems. Heavy metal toxicity, illness, and emotional stress can all affect the hair. So can vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Eat leafy greens, cantaloupe, fish, apricots, blueberries and other foods high in Vitamin A to promote healthy hair growth. Essential fatty acids, found in flaxseed, evening primrose, and fish oils keep hair shiny, as do silica and biotin, a B vitamin.

Alopecia, a common hair disorder, causes hair to fall out in small circular patches. This condition occurs when the body’s own immune system attacks hair-growing tissue. Natural treatments for this condition include saw palmetto, zinc, Vitamin B6, and emu oil. Dandruff, or seborrheic dermatitis is another common complaint. Some research suggests that this condition may result from nutrient deficiencies. Zinc, selenium, magnesium and biotin deficiencies have been linked to dandruff. Some simple activities can improve hair health. Regular exercise increases circulation, which can make hair appear shinier. A simple scalp massage has the same effect.

Most shampoos contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, a popular detergent also used in toothpaste and soap. This chemical can cause dermatitis if left in contact with the skin for long periods of time. Although it has been deemed safe for short-term application, the long-term safety of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate remains in question. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is also toxic to aquatic organisms, and does not biodegrade in the water system. Choose hair-care products carefully.
