Menopause
technically occurs a year after a woman experiences her last period.
The average age of menopause is 52, but many women begin experiencing
menopausal symptoms up to a year before this point. This phenomenon
is called peri-menopause. Peri-menopause brings a variety of symptoms,
including irregular or heavy periods, weight gain, headaches, and
dry skin or hair. It may also cause fibroids in the breasts. Conventional
medical treatments for peri-menopause include hormone replacement
therapy or birth control pills. These therapies can bring uncomfortable
side effects, though, motivating many women to turn to alternative
remedies.

The
most common herb used in treating peri-menopausal symptoms is black
cohosh.
