PERI-MENOPAUSE

Menopause technically occurs a year after a woman experiences her last period. The average age of menopause is 52, but many women begin experiencing menopausal symptoms up to a year before this point. This phenomenon is called peri-menopause. Peri-menopause brings a variety of symptoms, including irregular or heavy periods, weight gain, headaches, and dry skin or hair. It may also cause fibroids in the breasts. Conventional medical treatments for peri-menopause include hormone replacement therapy or birth control pills. These therapies can bring uncomfortable side effects, though, motivating many women to turn to alternative remedies.

The most common herb used in treating peri-menopausal symptoms is black cohosh.

Natural progesterone cream balances the estrogen levels in the body, easing many peri-menopausal symptoms. This cream is applied to the skin and can be absorbed more easily than oral hormone supplements. Diet may also play a role in the severity of peri-menopausal symptoms. Soy products contain phytoestrogens, naturally occurring estrogen-like compounds which keep the body’s hormone levels in balance. Essential fatty acids found in flax seed and fish reduce heavy menstrual bleeding, while bioflavonoids, found in grape and cherry skins, regulate estrogen production.

The most common herb used in treating peri-menopausal symptoms is black cohosh. This herb contains substances similar to estrogen and relieves hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and other menopausal symptoms. Studies have proven black cohosh’s effectiveness in these cases. Other herbs used to relieve menopausal symptoms include licorice, alfalfa, chasteberry and dong quai. St. John’s Wort is commonly used to relieve the depression and anxiety associated with peri-menopause
