MUMPS,
MEASLES, AND CHICKEN POX |
Mumps,
measles, and chicken pox are unpleasant experiences for any child.
These viral diseases spread quickly, and cause painful itching and
swelling. However, children recover from these diseases more quickly
than adults do, and with fewer lasting effects. Some natural remedies
can comfort children as their bodies fight off these infections. Chicken
pox is the most contagious of the three, and is characterized by fever
and an itchy, blistery rash. The itching results from a histimine
reaction similar to an allergic reaction. To minimize this reaction,
consider using a chamomile cream or aloe vera gel to ease itching.
Oatmeal and sodium bicarbonate baths will also soothe irritated skin.
Although reduced by vaccinations, children occasionally
catch measles, which is characterized by a rash and fever. Measles
also bring a red rash, which begins behind the ears and spreads all
over the body. Since these symptoms are the bodys way of ridding
itself of the virus, choose remedies that speed the progress of the
illness. Ginger and clove teas will accelerate the infections
course, while sage and chamomile will clear the infection during fever.
Some homeopathic remedies have also been used to treat measles. Aconite
is used for high fevers, and Euphrasia may be helpful in treating
swollen eyes. |

The mumps begin with a sore throat and swelling
around the cheeks. Since chewing and swallowing become difficult,
serve soft, easily digested food. Try mashed potatoes or pureed
carrots. Someone with the mumps also needs to drink lots of fluids.
Juices and herbal teas provide nutrients as well as fluid. An Ayurvedic
remedy called raisin water may help speed up the virus progress
while providing necessary nutrition. Boil 20-30 raisins in one or
two cups of water. A poor diet or a weakened immune system will
worsen the symptoms of a viral infection. Prevent serious infections
by eating a variety of fresh, healthy foods. Vitamin supplements
such as Vitamin C, A, and E may also be helpful in fighting infection.
