ULCERS
Ulcers are painful open sores in the lining of the stomach or digestive system. These sores occur when the mucous layer that protects the stomach lining breaks down. Stomach acid penetrates the ruptured mucous layer and begins to eat away at the digestive lining. Ulcers can form in either the stomach or duodenum. Duodenal ulcers are more common in men between thirty and sixty, while stomach ulcers affect women over the age of sixty. Both types of ulcer cause pain in the abdomen, and burning or gnawing feelings. Untreated ulcers can lead to severe pain and internal bleeding if the ulcer penetrates the stomach wall. This bleeding can cause anemia and increase the chance of stomach cancer.

Stress, poor diet, food allergies and irritation from tobacco, alcohol or caffeine may cause ulcers. A form of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori has also been linked to ulcer cases. To prevent ulcers, boost your immune system and avoid stressful situations and irritating foods. To soothe existing ulcers, eat smaller, more frequent meals that will be easier on your digestive system. Cook vegetables and grains until soft, or drink vegetable juices to minimize strain.
