Gravity causes varicose veins. Blood
returning from the legs to the heart must move upwards against the
force of gravity. The tiny valves that regulate blood flow can burst
under the tremendous pressure of the blood pushing down against the
flow. These burst valves cause the veins to distend, producing uncomfortable
and unsightly varicose veins. Obesity, constipation, and standing
for long periods of time worsen varicose veins. Varicose veins may
also be a sign of a buildup in liver toxins, which can congest the
liver and back up blood flow.
Limiting your intake of toxins may ease varicose
veins. Good nutrition improves blood circulation, controls weight
and prevents constipation. Eat foods high in fibre such as fruit,
vegetables, and whole grains. Use flaxseed oil to flavour food since
it is a natural laxative. Avoid saturated fats, and eat plenty of
fish to improve blood circulation.
Herbal treatments may also prevent varicose
veins. Horse chestnut, butcher broom and gotu kola contain bioflavinoids,
which hold the connective tissue of the veins together. A quick home
remedy for varicose veins is to alternate cold and hot packs over
the leg veins. Plunging your feet into alternating cold and hot baths
will have the same effect. Regular exercise and weight control can
prevent varicose veins and limit their severity. |
