Our
bodies contain many micro-organisms living in a constant state
of balance. One of these organisms, yeast, lives in the mouth, on
the skin, in the respiratory tract, and in the lining of the vagina.
Naturally-occurring bacteria usually regulates yeast levels. However,
birth control pills, hormone supplements, and antibiotics can kill
off the bodys supply of bacteria, allowing overgrowth of yeast,
or candidiasis. Candidiasis occurs most frequently in the vagina,
but can also occur in the mouth (called thrush) or on the skin (dermatocandidiasis).
In babies and children, yeast infections appear as diaper rash and
itchy scalps. If left untreated, yeast infections can affect the
entire body.
Stress and a weakened immune system can lead
to yeast infections. Make sure you are well rested and are eating
a balanced diet of whole foods, including many vitamins and minerals.
Vitamin C boosts the immune system. Eating acidophilus and bifidus
bacteria ensures that these "friendly" bacteria are present
in the body. Eat live-culture yogurt, or take acidophilus and bifidus
supplements. You may consider adding FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides),
indigestible carbohydrates which feed "friendly" bacteria.
Herbal remedies for yeast infections are usually
strong fungal fighters. Echinacea is extremely effective against
yeast organisms. It stimulates white blood cells to consume yeast
organisms. Other helpful herbal antibiotics include garlic and cranberry.
These herbs can be taken orally two to three times per day. Tea
tree oil is a strong antibiotic, but needs to be taken with caution
because it is poisonous if taken internally. Pau darco also
contains yeast-fighting compounds. Before attempting to treat a
yeast infection, see a qualified health practitioner. More serious
conditions may have similar symptoms to candidiasis.
