Chinese Herbs Treat Asthma

Chinese herbalist Yun Yee prescribed acupuncture treatment as well as herbal remedies.

Five years ago, no one could have persuaded Cherie Hamel to drink a pot full of twigs and leaves. Cherie had been suffering from severe asthma and allergies for years. Her weakened immune system fell victim to every passing cold and virus. In order to clear her lungs, she had taken injected steroids, oral steroids, ventilin, and antibiotics. Severe bouts of asthma took a toll on her body. She explains, "I had this vision of being an older person and just not being able to cope with this any more." After speaking to a friend who had visited a Chinese herbalist, Cherie visited Yun Yee, a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Yun Yee prescribed acupuncture treatment as well as herbal remedies, which is how Cherie began brewing herbal concoctions in her kitchen. She admits that she has learned a lot about this form of healing. She says, "the first time I brought these herbs home and I pulled them out of the bag I thought, oh, my gosh, what am I going to do with these?" Cherie took four treatments of the herbal brew, followed by a Chinese medicine that eases her bronchial congestion.

Despite Cherie’s reluctance when confronted with raw Chinese herbs, Yun Yee’s treatments were more effective than her conventional medical treatments. Along with acupuncture treatments and herbal supplements, Yun Yee recommended a change in Cherie’s diet. Under his advice, she removed all dairy products and shellfish from her diet. Within six weeks, Cherie’s symptoms began to improve. She explains, "before that, every morning I would wake up and I would really have to clear my lungs and I did notice that started to decrease and now that’s totally gone."

Cherie’s husband Richard had suffered severe headaches for years. On Cherie’s advice and with the support of his family doctor, Richard visited Yun Yee for acupunture treatments. Richard says, "within a month after the beginning of those sessions the headache did dissipate, and I never did find out what started the headache. Cherie and Richard now have a broader perspective on their health. Cherie says, "I’ve learned that acupuncture and the Chinese herbs are a viable alternative for me in conjunction with my Western doctor. The herbs do have an effect in strengthening my system." With her system now strong enough to withstand passing viruses, Cherie is happy that she began brewing herbal remedies in her kitchen.
