Waking Up From Insomnia

"I’d get up somewhere around midnight and wouldn’t be able to fall back asleep until about five in the morning" – Lee Ann Greekas

L
ee-Ann Greekas used to have lots of energy. However, she recently found herself excessively tired during the day and unable to sleep at night. Her high-intensity work in computer security left her little energy to exercise. She says, "I found once I was working full-time during the days I didn’t make the effort to go to the gym. At lunch time I would just run out and grab fast food. In the mornings I didn’t always have time for breakfast." Lee-Ann began to gain weight and she felt incredibly tired.

Although she had no trouble falling asleep at night, Lee-Ann rarely slept through until morning. She recalls, "I’d get up somewhere around midnight and wouldn’t be able to fall back asleep until about 5 in the morning and then my alarm clock goes off around 6 a.m." She was extremely tired at work, and when she returned home she could only lie around on the couch. Then Lee-Ann began to miss work. Although she was normally a sociable person, Lee-Ann didn’t have the energy to see her friends. She consulted her family doctor, who suggested that she was suffering from depression.

Lee-Ann thought that her depression was the result, rather than the cause of her insomnia. She consulted naturopath Jacqui Fleury in an attempt to understand the root cause of her illness. Dr. Fleury began by looking at Lee-Ann’s diet. Lee-Ann had been eating lots of simple sugars and refined foods, which Dr. Fleury replaced with complex carbohydrates and fibre. These modifications helped to limit the growth of candida yeast in Lee-Ann’s system. Lee-Ann explains, "my body couldn’t get rid of the build-up of bad fluids and yeast in my system and my thyroid function was quite low and that led to the insomnia.

After six weeks of her new diet, Lee-Ann was able to sleep through the night a few times a week. After adding some mild exercise to her routine, Lee-Ann now sleeps through the night consistently. She has more energy during the day, too. Lee-Ann says, "I go to work first thing in the morning, work until lunch time, I feel great... have something healthy like a salad at lunch and I’m fine for the rest of the day." Lee-Ann’s new diet and lifestyle are a permanent part of her life. Lifestyle changes have already given her energy during the day – and more restful nights.
