Managing Migraines

"They could do no more than just describe my symptoms and tell me that yes, it typically is women who suffer migraines as opposed to men." – Sharon Barney

Sharon Barney is a determined businesswoman. Her determination extends into her personal life as well. Since the age of twelve, Sharon has suffered severe migraine headaches. Her first headache occurred during high school band practice. She remembers, "it was a very hot day and suddenly I couldn’t see." Sharon’s migraine symptoms include nausea, head pain, blurred vision and hyper-sensitivity to light, sound, and smell. Conventional medicine provided Sharon with a diagnosis, but little else. "They could do no more than just describe my symptoms and tell me that yes, it typically is women who suffer migraines as opposed to men." Sharon received medication to ease her symptoms, but she could only take it after the headache pain had begun.

Sharon’s frequent headaches often put her behind in school, so she became extremely organized, finishing her assignments well in advance of their deadlines in case she had a migraine attack. This work ethic, or coping mechanism made Sharon a top student. She completed a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Business Administration in only two years and eight months. But despite all of her success, Sharon was still bothered by migraines. She decided to see a counsellor. She remembers, "I found that very helpful because it brought in many other issues . . . people diminishing my condition . . . the fact that there are no conventional remedies that work." Sharon became increasingly critical of conventional drug therapy. She eventually stopped taking migraine medication, since she observed that her treatment caused many after-effects.

One of Sharon’s close friends had recently enjoyed success after visiting a naturopathic doctor. She recommended Sharon to Dr. Angela Moore. Sharon recalls, "I was so impressed by the attention that she afforded me. She did not make assumptions about what I had or what my problem really was." Dr. Moore assured Sharon that her condition was serious and legitimate. She recommended some changes in diet, as well as a detoxification process. In addition, Dr. Moore and Sharon explored homeopathic and herbal remedies. One of these was a herb called feverfew.

"It took me a process of six years to get to a stage of relative health and I believe that I am still in the process of attaining health." – Sharon Barney

"Really, it was the addition of the feverfew that enabled me to be migraine free."

Sharon says, "really, it was the addition of the feverfew that enabled me to be migraine free. Prior to that I was able to diminish the severity and number of migraine attacks." Dr. Moore assisted Sharon in making the lifestyle changes which have helped her manage her migraines. Sharon says, "it took me a process of six years to get to a stage of relative health and I believe that I am still in the process of attaining health."
