Nurse
Marjorie Meckbath spent thirty years working as a caregiver. During
her long career she managed operating rooms and worked in mental
health. As a nurse, she was skilled at spotting potential health
problems. One day, she discovered a strange spot on her leg. When
this spot was diagnosed as a cancerous melanoma, Marjories
coping skills were stretched to the limit. Surgery to remove the
melanoma was a success, but Marjorie needed others to care for her.
Her son John explains, "the scary thing was knowing that my
mother was now in a position that she needed care and to have a
role reversal like that was very hard to see." After her surgery,
Marjorie returned home. Instead of being able to relax, she fell
into depression and sadness.
Marjorie says, "I felt very alone. It was a very isolated time.
I felt even suicidal at that time. I felt I didnt want to
go through what I had seen my clients go through."
Marjorie even lashed out at her loved ones including her
husband Sam. Sam had difficulty understanding her condition. He
states, "its very difficult for one person to understand
whats in the mind of another person as to how deep they might
be in depression." Feeling completely isolated, Marjorie decided
to get help with her depression.
She attended massage therapy sessions at a local health clinic that
specialized in alternative therapy. Her massage therapist suggested
another form of bodywork therapy. Shen Therapy or Physio-Emotional
Release Therapy relieves the tensions of the inner energy, or Qi.
Dr. Nora Morcos, M.D. conducts the therapy. In Dr. Morcos
opinion, painful emotions can become trapped within us, contributing
to everything from chronic pain to depression.
Dr. Morcos released Marjories tension both physical
and emotional. Dr. Morcos says, "a lot of tears came up for
her in the days or in the hours after the session. When we get back
in touch with our emotional life it feels like were less shielded."
Once she had begun Shen therapy, Marjorie felt that her healing
process had finally begun. She now maintains her physical health
through a program of nutritional supplements. Acupuncture and shiatsu
therapies keep her emotionally grounded. Best of all, there has
been no sign of cancer since her surgery. Her experience with cancer
was a turning point in her life. She says, "I think that the
cancer exposed my vulnerabilities. I think the depression made me
aware of something thats probably always been in my life."
