Sometimes the world seems to be running at a breakneck pace. At those
times, it is important to understand how to slow down and live in the
present. There are all kinds of ways to accomplish this calming: knitting,
walking, swimming, or just sitting quietly. All of these activities
are forms of meditation, and by accessing their calming influences we
can bring greater balance to our lives.
The
aim of meditation is to produce a calming influence and an awareness
of the present moment in life.

What
is meditation?
Any
kind of calming activity can be considered meditation if it focuses
the participants mind on the present, rather than on anxiety
about the past or future. The aim of meditation is to produce a
calming influence and an awareness of the present moment in life.
Thus, any activity, from fishing to needlepoint, can be meditative.
Meditation does, however, require some mental effort and clarity
of focus.

What kinds of meditation techniques are
there?
Although many activities have
meditative qualities, there are several common meditation techniques.
One technique is called concentrative meditation, in which a participant
focuses on one thing while excluding everything else. Breath awareness
focusing on inhaling and exhaling -- is often used as part of this
technique. When you practice concentrative meditation, you must consciously
eliminate distractions. Another technique, called mindfulness meditation,
opens the mind to all of the thoughts, feelings, sights and sounds that
pass through it. This technique emphasizes passivity, as participants
observe their thoughts and feelings, but do not respond to them.

What
are the benefits of meditation?
One of the key benefits of meditation is the control of stress.
Heart and respiration rates slow down, body temperature drops, and
brain waves change. These physical effects can reduce high blood
pressure, enhance the immune system, and help manage pain. Changing
our perceptions through meditation changes the way we perceive pain.
Meditation
controls stress and allows us to focus on the present moment.
How
long will it take to see the benefits of meditation?
Meditating regularly continues the benefits of meditation. Like
exercise, meditation can become part of a regular routine, which
preserves its calming influence.
