What
is naturopathy?
Based on healing principles over three thousand years
old, naturopathic medicine uses a variety of natural therapies to help
the body heal itself. The six principles of naturopathic medicine are:
The body has the power to heal itself
Treat the cause of a disease rather than its symptoms
Cause no harm to the patient during treatment
Teach the patient to take responsibility for his or her own health
Prevention is the best cure
Treat the whole person: mental, physical, and emotional
What do naturopaths treat?
Naturopaths treat
a variety of different ailments, from common colds to serious chronic
conditions such as cancer. But, unlike Western medical doctors, naturopaths
do not perform surgery. Instead, they focus on preventative care and longterm
care.

How long will it take before I see results?
Naturopathic medicine stresses the patients responsibility for his
or her own heath. Natural treatments may take longer than conventional
treatments, and patients need to understand the effects on their own bodies.

What can I expect when visiting a naturopath?
Naturopaths spend at least one hour in a preliminary consultation
with their client. They gather information on the patients
family history, lifestyle, diet, exercise and sleep patterns, as
well as the patients present condition. Sometimes they may
conduct a physical examination. Naturopaths are interested in the
mental and emotional, as well as the physical aspects of their patients
conditions.Like the consultations, naturopathic treatments vary
from individual to individual. Patients with the same diagnosis
may receive different treatments depending on their individual needs.
Treatments may include the use of herbs or dietary changes.

What
kind of education do naturopaths receive?
Naturopathic doctors must
have a minimum of seven years of education: three at university and four
at a recognized naturopathic college. They study the basic sciences, as
well as anatomy, physiology, natural modalities, and pharmacology. Naturopathic
medicine is regulated in many American states and Canadian provinces.
